I’ve been lucky my entire life and never have taken it for granted. For walking down my lane to greet the sea. I have countless memories spent on the sea side promenade as a teenager living my best years with friends. The sea gave us a calming effect and a vibe to fill our conversations.
Sea side Tale
Countless walks down the beach and a number of photographs capturing the seaside will always hold a special place in my heart. Every time I view it it has a different beauty and meaning to it and never gets old.
The sea side hence became a setting for Puttakappulu although I could have brought a better and more vivid description to it. Even then it played along in the background like the sound of the gushing waves and is key to keep the story flowing.
My first idea for the theme was what if I could have a bookshop by the sea? Wouldn’t that be lovely? That was the spark for the book and I found my rhythm and a seaside tale in me.
Puttakappulu

Sometimes, the best stories aren’t found on shelves, they’re in the hearts of the people we meet.
Puttakappulu is a soul-stirring tale set by the sea, where life unfolds in unexpected and beautiful ways.

Puttakappulu by Parinaz Jokhi presents itself as a deeply atmospheric and quietly enchanting novel one that belongs as much to the tradition of literary fiction as it does to the heartwarming genre of nostalgic storytelling. The novel is set in a coastal town, which functions not just as a backdrop but as a living, breathing character in its own right. Jokhi imbues this seaside town with personality and poetry, drawing the reader into a rhythm of life that is unhurried, intimate, and brimming with charm.
Raman Pillai, the gentle and observant proprietor of a seaside bookshop. His character tenderly drawn and layered with both melancholy and quiet joy serves as an anchor for the various stories and lives that orbit his world. Much like the books he curates, Raman’s shop becomes a sanctuary where narratives are exchanged, identities are shaped, and memories are quietly preserved. Jokhi’s writing here is particularly evocative, with prose that often feels like a breeze itself — soft, textured, and laden with sensory detail.
Puttakappulu explores themes of memory, place, and the quiet dignity of everyday life. The novel resists overt drama; instead, it finds richness in the small, often-overlooked details a broken tile with history etched in its cracks, hopscotch chalk fading beneath monsoon rains, or the tinkling bell that heralds the arrival of a new story in the form of a customer. In this way, the book becomes a meditation on the interconnectedness of people and the places they inhabit.
Jokhi’s prose style is lyrical without becoming overwrought. Sentences unfold with a natural cadence, and there is a distinct visual and tactile quality to her descriptions. Readers can almost feel the sun-warmed spines of books, hear the calls of distant vendors, and smell the salty air curling through the town’s narrow lanes. The language, while elegant, remains accessible striking a balance between literary richness and readability.
Puttakappulu is a novel of texture and tenderness a literary postcard from a town where time pauses and lives converge gently, like footprints in sand. Parinaz Jokhi has written more than a novel. She has offered readers a refuge, a space of quiet reflection, and a reminder of the enduring beauty in ordinary things.

It’s a sweet book I read on my holiday. It was exactly what I needed to feel good. Raman’s journeys with his little book store in a small town Thalassery, India is a charming read with characters well fleshed out.
