It had rained all day. The streets shone under the lights. Meera got a message from Jatin. Meet me today at 7. She had been seeing Jatin for four long years ever since their last year in college. Now both working they still held on to each other.
She got dressed. A simple sky blue tee and jeans grabbed her windcheater when Jatin called that he was waiting for her.
She was always happy to see him after a long day. It was still drizzling. She gave him a quick kiss and got on to the bike. Jatin at once broke into how his day had been and asked her about hers. They rode like that for awhile till they decided to sit on the promenade. It was too wet so they decided to walk. Meera stopped to look at the sea rough and grey and swelling. Jatin got a call and excused himself for awhile. She happened to look at a couple closely much like themselves. Her eyes fell on him and he looked straight into hers. She didn’t know what it was but she felt strangely close to him and drawn to him. She noticed that his partner was busy telling him something.
For a moment the rain starting to come down more heavily, the wind in her hair and his smile towards her. She suddenly blushed and looked away and Jatin led her away to walk further on.
Jatin dropped Meera home both drenched in the rain but feeling fresh and happy. Just as Meera was saying goodbye Jatin grabbed her close and said, “I saw you looking at him. It was as though you had seen your soulmate. It’s okay to momentarily love another but remember you are mine forever and for always.” Meera embarrassed started to cry and held on to him. Both of them wet with tears and rain. Jatin meant the world to her. She promised to meet him the next day and left.
Later that night in bed she remembered that smile, that deep gaze, the grey around but she shrugged it off as just a stormy rainy night. In her mind she thought, “What if?”
