Sonic Queens

I love music in almost all its genres and although male artists I listen in to more frequently. There are these wonderfully beautiful and vocally strong female artists, these sonic queens that color my playlist.

Pat Benatar

Pat Benatar, the “Queen of Rock,” initially trained in opera but found her true calling in the world of rock. Her breakthrough hit Heartbreaker in 1979 paved the way for a remarkable career. Despite facing resistance as a female rocker, Benatar’s persistence made her a symbol of empowerment, celebrated for her strong vocals and dynamic stage presence.

We Belong is a song I can’t stop listening to. Pat Benatar for me has the voice of a strong woman with an independent streak and her music resonates with me a lot.

Bonnie Raitt

Something to Talk About and Angel from Montgomery are some of my favourite songs. They are where I discovered Bonnie Raitt and the blues.

Bonnie Raitt’s musical journey, rooted in blues, rock, and folk, began in the 1970s. Overcoming initial struggles, Raitt gained recognition with albums like Nick of Time. Beyond her musical prowess, Raitt is admired for her commitment to social and environmental causes. This makes her journey a harmonious blend of artistry and activism.

Katie Melua

Katie Melua has recently turned an artist I love listening to when I came across The Closest Thing to Crazy. I fell in love with it and it’s now my favourite song.

Katie Melua’s career kicked off when songwriter and producer Mike Batt discovered her talent. Her debut album Call Off the Search marked the start of a successful journey. Melua’s soothing voice and introspective lyrics have garnered a dedicated fan base. Her ability to explore diverse genres keeps her music fresh and appealing.

Shania Twain

Shania Twain gave us those evergreen numbers like You’re Still the One, From this Moment, Forever and For Always and we fell in love with her. Her infectious and energetic vibe makes her my all time favourite female artist.

Shania Twain’s journey to becoming a country-pop icon wasn’t without challenges. Early financial hardships didn’t deter her, and she went on to create one of the best-selling albums by a female artist, Come On Over. Twain’s story is a testament to resilience and the ability to turn adversity into triumph.

Maggie Rogers

I saw Maggie Rogers performing Light On at a current mood hosted by John Mayer. She is an artist I’m going to listen to more of. Her vibe is so pure and beautiful.

Maggie Rogers gained widespread attention when a video of Pharrell Williams reacting to her song Alaska went viral. This marked a turning point in her career. Rogers’ journey is characterized by her unique sound, blending folk elements with electronic beats. Her authenticity and vulnerability in her music resonate with a broad audience. She is starting to be a rising star in the music industry.

These five female artists not only showcase incredible musical talent but also embody resilience, persistence, and the ability to overcome challenges on their artistic journeys. Each has carved out a distinct space in the music world, leaving an indelible mark on fans worldwide.

Sonic Queens for me are one where her music resonates more powerfully than even her own persona. Where her songs are listened to on repeat and speak to the heart. These are my Sonic Queens.
