The Wedding

Danya had been buried in work for days, with no time to catch her breath. The relentless grind left her drained, both physically and emotionally. That evening, she decided to leave early, yearning for a moment of reprieve.

At home, she slipped into her cozy pajamas and a worn pullover, her armor against the world. Resting on the couch, she mindlessly scrolled through Facebook until a familiar name caught her eye Rahim. Her childhood friend and neighbor. It was his birthday.

For years, Rahim had spent his birthdays quietly, never one for grand celebrations. On impulse, Danya sent him a cheerful birthday message. His response was immediate, warm, and eager, pulling her into a conversation that felt as natural as breathing.

In the days that followed, their chats became a routine. Rahim, though younger, had always known her deeply, and their conversations flowed effortlessly. For the first time in years, Danya felt a sense of companionship. After long, grueling days, his words brought a spark of joy, a reprieve from her solitary existence.

As their bond deepened, Danya found herself anticipating their exchanges. Yet, an undercurrent of apprehension crept in. Rahim was younger, and she worried about the whispers of a judgmental neighborhood. Despite living in the same building, they had not crossed paths in person a fact that left her both relieved and longing.

One week, Danya noticed Rahim’s silence. Days passed with no message from him. She fought the urge to reach out, unsure if her feelings were hers alone to bear. She told herself he was busy, but the void of his absence gnawed at her.

Taking a break from work to stave off burnout, Danya spent a languid afternoon scrolling through her phone. Her thumb paused over a story on Rahim’s sister’s account. The video started automatically; a wedding procession.

The camera panned to a radiant couple walking under an arch of flowers. Danya froze as her gaze landed on Rahim, his arm linked with his bride’s.

The breath caught in her chest. She stared at the screen, her emotions colliding; disbelief, guilt, and a dull ache of betrayal. Could she blame him? Had she misread their connection entirely? Was it her loneliness that had spun the illusion of intimacy, or had he harbored feelings he could never express?

Her thoughts spiraled as questions piled upon questions. Had this been an arranged marriage? Had he felt trapped by family expectations? Or had she simply blinded herself to the truth, mistaking his friendship for something more?

Her fingers trembled as she set the phone down, stumbling to the kitchen for water. A glass bowl slipped from her hand, shattering against the tile. She stared at the shards, her reflection fractured in the glittering pieces.

In that moment, her emotions overwhelmed her.
Deception.
Anger.
Hurt.
Confusion.
Heartbreak.

They tore through her gentle heart, leaving it battered and bewildered. In the silence that followed, Danya sat among the shards of glass, feeling as though her dreams had shattered alongside them.
